Maryborough Rovers History

Maryborough Rovers FNC
  • Formation and Early Years: The club was formed in 1966 and played in the Maryborough Castlemaine District Football Netball League (MCDFNL). The club’s nickname was the Magpies, and their home ground was Jubilee Oval.
  • Successes: Over their history, the Rovers won three football premierships. Their last premierships were back-to-back victories in 1990 and 1991. The 1991 grand final was won against their future merger partners, Royal Park. The netball club was established in 1988.
  • Merger Discussions: Due to the challenges faced by a small town in sustaining multiple competitive teams and the general decline in country football participation, discussions about a potential merger with Royal Park had been ongoing intermittently for years.
  • Amalgamation: In May 2023, members of both Maryborough Rovers and Royal Park emphatically voted to amalgamate the two clubs. This decision was seen as a positive step for the sustainability of football and netball in the Maryborough community.
  • Formation of the Giants: The amalgamation was finalized for the start of the 2024 season, forming the new Maryborough Giants Football Netball Club. The Giants play at Royal Park’s ground (JH Hedges Park). The new club committed to honoring the heritage and history of both the Rovers and Royal Park within the new club’s identity.
